So, SOMEONE said I needed to get my ass back to WIPpet Wednesdays. And because this SOMEONE commands a fleet of flying monkeys, here I am.
But the thing is, edits are still going really well, so I don’t have time for anything complicated. I was having climax issues (heh), but I think I’ve got it sorted. Things have changed, melodrama has shifted to a lower-burning but still toasty conflict (I hope) that explodes into a lengthier scene than I’d had before.
I still don’t feel entirely comfortable adding words, but hey, I have permission. Yeah, the story’s long, but this is one advantage of independent publishing. I can give readers the whole story without worrying about being rejected because I went over 100,000 words to tell it properly, and I don’t have to charge $12.99 for an e-book to let people enjoy it. VALUE, PEOPLE!*
Oh, and if you offered to read an ARC and would like one a tiny bit early so you can notify me of typos/ minor flubs I may have added in the editing process , let me know. I have this idea where ARC readers who notice mistakes get entered for a chance to win a cameo appearance in the last book of the trilogy. 🙂
Here’s 14+14+5=33 words from the climactic scene itself. No context, because I don’t want to give anything away.

Aren wiped the blood from his chin. “I’m not going to stop fighting until you let her go.”
“I thought so.” Severn tilted his head to one side. “You know you can’t win.”
“I’ll try.”
–
Hmm… I feel like that won’t quite satisfy our host KL Schwengel’s thirst for blood.
Oh, well. *evil grin*
For anyone who’s new to the blog (hi there!), WIPpet Wendnesday is the day when a bunch of us post a snippet from a work in progress that somehow relates to the day’s date. In my case, the math was simple (14th day, 5th month, [20]14), but it can get crazy. Page number, holiday references, algebra… you name it, we’ve done it. Feel free to join in by posting on your own blog, then link back here, and be sure to stop by and say hello to everyone else! We’re a friendly bunch, I promise.
Quickie ROW80 Update
It’s good. Seriously. I’ve gotta go. Still might be done edits by then end of this week. Then another read-through, minor tweaking (not twerking), and then formatting HOLY CARP.
Signing off… back to work.

*The paperback might cost you, though 😉

Welcome back to WIPpet Wednesday! I know you’re busy!!! Glad to see Aren again. 🙂

Kathi was gonna kick my butt if I didn’t come back, I swear…
What’s new with you? I need to come by your blog ASAP. I feel out of the loop.
May 16th, 2014 at 10:20 am
I’m revising too. It’s slow going, Kate.
May 14th, 2014 at 11:08 am
You said “climax.” *giggles like a 12-year-old*
It is nice not to worry about word count. One of my friends works in publishing, and her company requires novels to be between 80-100,000 words—no exceptions, and they must follow a whole host of other rules. Blech.

Yeeeeah… one of the reasons I decided not to query. My story would be downright anemic and depressed if I cut that much. 🙂
May 14th, 2014 at 11:55 am
This is why I like my publisher….so long as it’s over 40k, she doesn’t care. =P
May 14th, 2014 at 11:56 am
I like the tenacity in the excerpt! =P Keep on editing! chapter 12 can’t come back and bite you now.
May 14th, 2014 at 11:56 am
Here’s hoping…
May 14th, 2014 at 5:58 pm
You go, Steen! Get Severn to let her go!
May 14th, 2014 at 6:00 pm
*grumble* That does it. Auto-correct and I are through. My message was for Aron.
May 14th, 2014 at 7:07 pm
If there’s ever a character who looks like Aren and people keep getting them confused, he’s going to be named Steen.
May 14th, 2014 at 10:17 pm
Oh good. I feel better now. 😛
May 16th, 2014 at 10:21 am
ReGi, that note made me laugh out loud. Auto correct has ruined more lives . . .
May 16th, 2014 at 4:17 pm
No joke!
May 14th, 2014 at 6:32 pm
Firstly…*runs across room to hug Kate* *whispers behind hand* Don’t tell anyone about that, okay. It will ruin my reputation.
About time you got back but seriously?!!? That’s all I get?!!? You’re evil. 😀 It’s one of your most endearing traits, by the way. Aren…le sigh, le swoon. Severn…my foot is twitching.
And…um…early ARC…
May 14th, 2014 at 7:05 pm
But of course.
And I won’t tell a soul. 🙂

It sounds like you’re so close to finishing! That editing process can be a bear, though. Thankfully, it feels so good when you get a scene or section worked out and know it really shines now. Best wishes with the rest of your round and your goals!

Nice little teaser there! 🙂
And I agree with the holy carp of formatting. At least Scrivener has taken a lot of the work out of that for ebooks. Not good enough for paperback, though. 😦
May 15th, 2014 at 11:23 am
I loved the snippet!
And yeah for being almost done.
May 15th, 2014 at 1:38 pm
Oh I like this Kate. How exciting!! I hope Aren wins. 🙂
May 15th, 2014 at 4:10 pm
Some serious Kick Butt in play here, Kate. Glad you came back to give it to us 😉
And so glad you aren’t surrendering on wordcount, because shorter books always make me feel a bit disappointed.
