WIPpet Wednesday: So Difficult

HELLOOOOOO, and welcome to WIPpet Wednesday!

Before we start, I’d like to welcome anyone who has joined us recently. Make yourselves comfortable. Join in on conversations if it suits you, lurk if you’re more of a skulking type. Everyone’s welcome.

Two more announcements… I’m doing a Goodreads giveaway for a signed paperback copy of Bound! Here’s the link for that. The other thing is that Bound (the e-book version) goes up to regular price next Wednesday, or whenever various retailers decide to comply with the change. The intro sale has lasted two months, and it’s been fantastic. Regular price is still a great deal, but if you know anyone who’s been putting off picking up their copy, now would be a good time for them to do it if they want to save a few dollars.  Fair warning. 🙂

For anyone unfamiliar with the game blog hop, WIPpet Wednesday is where we share a quick snippet from a Work In Progress (get it?) that relates in some way to the day’s date. We get a little creative with the math sometimes, to the point where it’s basically a Cloud Cuckoo Land of do as you please, but it’s good fun, and I’m so glad to have the WIPpeteers in my life.

That said… guys. I’m trying to avoid spoilers, but it’s becoming impossible. Even revealing who’s in scenes is difficult sometimes. Like this one, for example. I’ll tell you that the first speaker is Rowan, the second is a rather unlikely and occasionally pants-crappingly terrifying teacher she’s found to help her with… um… *sigh*

I’m cutting this to avoid spoilers, so I apologize for the lack of stuff. Also, this isn’t the beginning of a scene. I swear there’s set-up.

I’m going to have to start a new project just so I have things to share.

WIPpet math: 20-8  = 12 paragraphs

“Did I do that?” I whispered, and reached up to touch the pendant that hung around my neck. I couldn’t have chosen a less likely guardian.

“You did,” he said. “Never doubt it.”

“You did that on purpose? To provoke me?”

“Obviously.”

My legs began to tremble, and I sat on the bed again. “It was beautiful.”

“It was acceptable. You’ll do better. How did that feel? What were you thinking when it happened?”

“I was afraid you were going to hit me. Mostly angry, though.” I looked up and met his eyes as the reality of it sank in. “You’re horrible.”

“I know. It worked, though. You’ve been allowing emotions to hold you back when you should be using them, using your passion to direct and propel your magic. I was certain that if threatened, you would respond appropriately.”

“And if I hadn’t?”

“Then you’d be in pain now. Does it matter? It worked.”

Rage still seethed within me. “Your methods are reprehensible.”

“I know. But you can’t argue with those results.”

Yeah, that wasn’t helpful, was it? That’s it. Next week I start writing zombierotica or something just so I can post here.

Actually… next week I should be starting book 3. NGUH.

Feel free to join in on your own blog and link back, too– just be sure to visit others if you want them to come see you. Community, and all of that. 🙂

I love the extract, each of your characters have a clear voice and obvious moral codes. I just wish I knew what the mysterious speaker had done that was so reprehensible so I would know for myself whether or not he was really as mean as Rowan says. I suppose I’ll just have to buy the book when it comes out…

I also now really want to watch the Lego Movie… you evil woman

I love this excerpt, and I don’t normally like 1st person POV. The only problem is that I want to know what he’s done to her that’s so awful. And who he is. That would be nice, too….

    UNIKITTY! She’s my favorite.

I have stuff I am *dying* to post for WIPpet, but…spoilers. So I hear you. Zombierotica is a good choice. How many spoilers could there possibly be in that, right?

Fantastic excerpt Kate and makes me REALLY want to read Book 2! Can’t wait, but I guess I’m just gonna have to. 🙂

Zombierotica now there’s a genre you don’t see every day! It’s making me cringe just thinking about it – falling body parts and what not…need I say more?

Anyway, I digress, as I am want to do. Your excerpt was very entertaining. I’m a sucker for strong dialogue and this scene sparked with life 🙂

      I don’t know you, so I won’t tell you my zombie-and-hooker joke. It’s disgusting. 🙂

I love writing dialogue. It’s description that kills me!

You can’t do that to me…now I’ll be thinking about it for days!

I enjoy dialogue too. The descriptions I’ve been working on, but I still have to go back and edit a scene to death before I’m happy 🙂

Every time I see your cover I fall in love all over again. *g*

Sorry, I should be responding to your snippet. 🙂 Great interaction between the characters. And I’m with you on dialogue being easy and the stuff you have to put around it being the hardest part. If only we could move to Hollywood and start writing blockbusters!

I’m so curious to see what preceded this scene! Nice reaction on the narrator’s part, though. The guardian is lucky she didn’t fling herself at him in rage. 🙂

Good luck on the book. I’m in awe of the gorgeous cover!

I have a hard time finding snippets too. There are these great scenes you really want to share, but can’t because SPOILER! And, please hurry with the other book. I’m reading BOUND a second time, and your characters are becoming friends 😀

Here’s hoping your Book Three goes smoother than mine! *downs bottle*

“I’m going to have to start a new project just so I have things to share.” That is both the downside and upside of WIPpet Wednesday. 😀

Is it September yet? Just wondering. No particular reason. *checks e-mail inbox*

That’s why i created Queen of Bears. I was getting too close to revealing all the spoilers in Fairy Blood. :-/

Even with this snippet, I seem to remember something from, oh… way back when that had a similar flavor, like we might be looking at the same two characters. Maybe not. Either way, it’s a scintillating excerpt. What did he (it?) do!?!

  • Eden's avatar Eden

Because… spoilers. Bah! Give it to me, now, dang it! 😉

In the book I’m (re)reading there’s a scene similar to this…although more intimate I suspect. I couldn’t help myself… I kept seeing the “stranger” looking at Rowan wide-eyed, grinning and tapping her nose lightly with a fingertip as he said “But it worked.”

    I think she’d slap him.

  • Emily Wrayburn's avatar Emily Witt

Agh, I am so intrigued by this! Who is this guy and what did he do? And what exactly did Rowan do in response?

  • shanjeniah's avatar shanjeniah

    Holy spoilers, Batman…..

I’ve been “forced” into sharing Trip and T’Pol *whistles nonchalantly* so that I can revise enough of Chameleon’s Dish not to give things away that I oughtn’t be giving away…

    I get it.

And I STILL wanna know – what the heck just happened here?!

    LOVE the cover! =D

And I DARE you to start a new project as soon as you read this! =D
