Today was AWESOME!

Wow, good day today! I had a little headache thanks to the nice, sunny weather, but I’ll let that go. Because…

-the kids slept until 8:00 this morning.

-it was sunny and 12 degrees (Celsius) outside today.Ā

– AND… (redacted to preserve PG rating)

-I took Jack for a long and challenging (for me) walk. Got sweaty and a little sunburned BUT we had a good walk AND…

-a bald eagle flew right over us! So amazing.

-AND… I got to go to a Jamberry nails party on facebook. I realized that a party with no other actual people around is actually the perfect party for me. My mom also attended, so we kind of got to go shopping together from half a country away. Aww.

-AND I washed the car for the first time since the garden hose froze. I’d forgotten how very silver Tina Fe was under all of that dirt.

-AND I started editing another favourite part of Bound. OK, so I have too many favourites, but there’s feelings in this part, yo. Good feelings. Confusing feelings. Also children in ridiculous costumes punching each other, which can’t be a bad thing.

And with that, I go off to bed. The children are asleep, no one is coughing, this Tension Tamer tea is very delicious (and has a dragon the box, so hooray for that), the Advil will be working soon, the laundry is folded, and I’m going to go dream me some dreamy dreams.

Goodnight!

Letter From Camp

Hidey-ho, readeroonies!

Hang on…

Sorry, got in summer camp mode there for a minute. Apparently a far-too-enthusiastic clown camp of some sort. Sorry about that.

Things are great here at Camp NaNo… at least, the part in my head. In there it’s all pleasantly cool breezes off the lake and clear sunsets just before campfire and s’more time, with writing and horseback riding in between activities.

Outside of my head, not so much.

Both of the kids have been sick for a week with a nasty head cold and occasional fever. We’re constantly battling over nose wipings and medicine takings, and nights have been rotten. Also, and I don’t want to perpetuate a stereotype here, but they both have what is generally known as “the man cold.” I’m needed at all times, which doesn’t leave a lot of time for writing.

I’m still hovering around 2,000 words. Not great.

But the week hasn’t been all bad, not by a long shot. I’m grateful that I’ve (thus far) escaped with only a slight stuffy nose and a few headaches. I had one day where we got out of the house and to the dollar store and Walmart, and it shall go down in history as “the day I got those super pretty notebooks.” That was the same day my paperback copy of the Deptford Trilogy came in the mail, and my sponsor goodies for camp. SWEET!

Even better, the wonderful Jae at Lit and Scribbles featured me/this blog on Wednesday. Isn’t that nice? I’m very excited to see who else she’s got lined up to talk to this month– you should go check it out, too! New friends are always fun.

I guess that’s about all I have to report for the week. Almost done “final” (oh, it is to laugh!) revisions to chapter 6 and 7 of Bound, and I may have found the perfect critique partner if she decides to stick with me. The other new project still insists on bouncing around in my head, but that’s OK- I’ve got these new notebooks handy so I can brain-vomit the ideas out fairly quickly.

So far next week’s looking pretty quiet around here, but I have a few posts scheduled (one featuring many immoral things you don’t want to hear about). Don’t go too far, though; if anything interesting happens, or if I really need to procrastinate, I’ll be around.

Have a great weekend, everyone! Anybody got big plans?

Spring Break at the Beach, WOOOOO!

Not quite the same here as elsewhere, but we did have an amazing trip to the beach last week. We stopped on the way home from having supper, and found that the recent warm temperatures had left the tide line littered with huge chunks of ice. It was amazing! They were white on the edges, blue in the middle, and the craziest shapes. Of course, I took pictures for all of you. Don’t you feel special? I hope you brought a coat, and maybe a hat if you’re a warm-weather person. It’s a bit chilly!

032

^That’s me and the boys checking out one that looked like a huge molar. Rawr.

038

^Yay ice!

058

^The one in the back was fun; it had a hole in the middle, and big waves went right through it. And the one in front there looked like a huge, dismembered foot, which is always amusing.

The ice monsters weren’t the only interesting things we discovered. We found a spot where the beach was built up high with sand on top of ice, and all of that was undercut by the water flowing down from where snow was thawing higher up, forming a tunnel. Simon is demonstrating for you the stability of this structure. Wheeee!

027

Also, and this is probably only interesting if you’re a minor geology dork like I am*, the waves had washed away parts of the beach to reveal layers of sand and ice all over the place, just like the layers of sedimentary rock they use to date, like, old stuff. And stuff.

051

And yes, there’s Jack. He did a LOT of photobombing on this trip. Also, a lot of acting like a giant goofball. See also:

018

I just… there aren’t words for this. I guess he doesn’t look sad in this picture, so that’s a good thing. *sigh*

That’s it, that’s all I’ve got for you good people today. Hope you had fun! Now, who wants some hot chocolate?

*as in, I find it fascinating, but am not an expert. My level of expertise is minor; my dorkiness is not. That’s actually… well, pretty massive.

Something Sweet

I’m feeling pretty blah today- sick, drugged, tired, kinda cranky. Instead of spreading all of that to you dear, wonderful people, I’m going to show you something that made me smile this week, and hope it does the same for you.

Have an amazing weekend!

White Rabbit!

I love superstitions. I have a strange relationship with them, though. I don’t actually believe that anything is going to bring me good luck, but at the same time I won’t roll up the rim on a Tim Horton’s cup if there’s still liquid in it (because then I totally won’t win), and if I see something amazing like a crow executing a perfect mid-air barrel-roll, I will definitely accept that as a sign of good things to come. I’m comfortable living with a lot of seemingly conflicted ideas in my head.

As today is the first of the month, my family has been in heated competition to be the first person to say “White Rabbit” to everyone else. My mom says that her mother used to wake them up this way on the first of every month. She was British, and apparently that’s where the tradition/superstition comes from. I’ve always just sort of taken it for granted that our rules were the right ones: You have to say it to someone before they say it to you, and your prize is… well, bragging rights was all I ever thought it was before, but apparently it’s good luck.

I looked it up this morning (sorry, nothing here you can’t find on Google). Apparently more people do this than I realized, and there are a ton of variations. Most common seems to be that it has to be the first thing out of your mouth on the first of the month, and this will somehow bring you good luck. There are lots of people besides my family who do it as a competition, but the former seems to be more common.

People say different things, too, and I’d bet that most of them are rabidly (rabbitly?) loyal to their own phrase. We say “White Rabbit” in my family, always have; the other most common seems to be “Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit,” followed by “Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits”- possibly multiplying the luck, or just because you never see just one rabbit, I don’t know- or repeating “White Rabbit(s)” three times.

It’s fun, but I have way too many questions, especially where competition is concerned.

First of all, how does technology affect this? Does a Facebook status shout-out count, or does it have to be said to people individually to count as “winning?” How about a Facebook message or e-mail? What if the other person is asleep or not online? What if they call and say it to you before they see the written message, or even before they pick up a voice message from you? Could I schedule a blog post for midnight on the first and say it counts, even though most of my family won’t see it? I NEED ANSWERS, PEOPLE!*

My mom wants to know how time zones affect the competition. In times past this wasn’t an issue. Anyone you said it to was close enough to hear it in person, or far enough to require a long-distance phone call (and who’s going to do that at midnight?). Now, however, we’re in touch with people all over the world. I, being an hour and a half ahead of the rest of my family, think that time zones definitely count. Depending on what the other rules are, I can White Rabbit anyone I please at midnight, Newfoundland time (yeah, we have our own time zone. We’re cool like that). Not that I’m awake at midnight, ever, but still.

And finally, my creepiest concern with the competition. If we honestly believe that winning gives us good luck, where is it coming from? I would hope that it’s just like saying it to yourself, that the luck is somehow spontaneously generated or comes from out there somewhere (possibly sneezed out by a unicorn who is particularly fond of bunnies), but what if it’s not? What if we’ve been stealing each other’s luck all these months and years? WHAT THEN, MY FAMILY?! *dramatic sob*

Here’s what I’ve decided: It’s a superstition, it’s silly, but it’s fun. If I want to start saying it first thing on the first of every month, it’ll be a lot better than the “It’s not time to get up yet!” that I let out at 6:30 this morning when I heard the *thud thud thud* of little feet. As far as competition goes, I hereby declare that (for me) it’s for entertainment purposes only, $3.99 per minute, long distance charges may apply. And time zones are a perfectly cromulent way to gain an edge. HA!

Seriously, we need a rule book.

Does anyone else do this, or have other first-of-the-month or family superstitions?

*My cousin who texts his mom at midnight the morning of the first every month would say that of course it counts.

Happy *mumble mumble* Birthday, Mom!

Yes, hard to believe it’s the *mrmblbrmbl* anniversary of my mom’s birth! The woman who taught me to love books (not that it was a hard sell, mind you), who taught me that it’s always a good time for pursuing a dream, who has lived with Depression and still always managed to be the kind of mom I can only try to be. Definitely a day to celebrate!

By some strange cosmic coincidence, it’s also her twin sister’s birthday. What are the odds, right?! So happy birthday to my aunt Kathy, too, AND her lovely daughter Faith, who can’t possibly be eleven, because that would just make me feel old. No one who was a baby at my wedding can be almost a teenager. UNACCEPTABLE.

Love you all!

(Also, I believe it’s Spooky Steve’s birthday. Most of you don’t know him, but he’s one of the amazing people that made my work life bearable when I was pregnant and everything sucked. So happy birthday to Steve!)
