ROW80 Update: Getting There Edition

This morning I told someone my brain was like a flock of birds, and that is the absolute truth. Sort of a murmuration at times, little starling thoughts all flying together in formation, working together and mostly heading in the same direction. Other times it’s just chaos, a thousand different species all pecking at each other and going off in different directions.

I suppose this is to be expected a month before one’s first book release.

Business. Promotion. Publishing. Formatting. Waiting on reader responses. Organizing.

Exhiliration. Self-doubt. Questions. Distractions. Perfectionism.

For the record, I’m not complaining. I chose this path, and though I think it’s perfectly valid to complain about the things we’ve chosen (hello, parenting!), I’m really not. As crazy and sometimes overwhelming as this all is, I wouldn’t have it any other way. For the first time, I’m attempting something big. Something that’s so challenging that I might fall flat on my face. Or maybe I’ll soar like this:

…or more likely, I’ll survive the business bits, get this book out, and move on to the next one. Because though I’ve put myself in the role of publisher, that’s just a thing that I’m doing. It’s not what I am. I’m a writer. I’m going to write.

ROW80 Update

I guess it’s time to look back at my goals from the start of this round to see what’s done and what’s not.

Wow. So really, we’re looking good as far as goals go. Coming up: revising book 2 for JuNoWriMo, which I hope will take my mind off of everything else. The story is there, but I need to add to it. There’s a love story that needs more attention, and I think the rest could do with some punching up.

So there we go.

Setting the Date: Last Call! (ROW80 Update)

Voice in my head: Gooooing to the chap-PULL and we’re… GONNA get…

Me: Not that kind of date-setting.

Nope, just the cover reveal for Bound.

We’re going to do the full cover and blurb* reveal Monday, June 2, 2014, God willing and fates co-operating. We’ll also have the release date by then. And the option of adding it to your Goodreads TBR shelf.

VIMH: Oh, that old book thing? People are going to get sick of hearing about that. You never shut up about it.

Me: I know, I don’t want to pester people. I just have a little… issue. Thing.

VIMH: Just the one issue? Really?

Me: Ugh. YES. You see, my master list of Awesome Helping Type Peoples disappeared in the Great Basement Floodening, when I had to evacuate my office. I’ve been looking through e-mails people sent me and comments on blog posts, but I know I’m missing a few people, and I don’t have an e-mail address for others**. If you want to help a gal out, please please pretty please comment or send me an e-mail (kate.sparkes (at) live.ca). If I haven’t heard from you yet but you’d like to join in on June 2, let me know. The more the merrier! I’ll link back to your blog from here and also the facebook place.

For anyone who missed it, we had a wee cover preview on my Facebook author page. You know you want to look. Go on… I’ll wait.

Oh, and I have a few spots left for free ARCs (advance review copies) if anyone’s willing to read and leave an honest review on Goodreads, Amazon, wherever. And of course, if anyone wants to host ANYTHING around release day or any time after, I’m open. Interviews, character interviews, guest posts. I’m not doing a blog tour, not doing big promotion when I only have one book out, so anything that helps get the word out will earn my VERY MUCH OF GRATITUDE.

So that’s it. No more pestering, no more OMG IT’S ALMOST TIME, no more freak-outs until June 2. I promise. You’re welcome.

ROW80Update

Finished read-through on Bound.

Sat here to do part of it. *sigh*

Not quite the same as reading with fresh eyes, but that was the closest I’ve ever come to reading it just for fun. And it was SO FUN. Hooray! Now it’s off to a few people (kind, brave souls) who are going to slap me silly over typos and such, and then the rest of the advance copies go out.

No big deal. I can do this.

Formatting is coming along… eh. I’m going to have to hire someone for the paperback formatting, but I think with Scrivener’s help I can do the e-books. Whether those play nice with distributors is another issue. If anyone has advice on this, feel free to share with the class!

*”blurb” still sounds wrong to me. Blurb is what other authors write to put on your cover or inside of the book. I prefer “back cover copy,” but whatever. People say blurb. Cool people. PEER PRESSURE.

Some News, A Sample, A Dance Party. Just a Regular Day…

Hey, folks! I don’t have much time to post– there’s this dog here waiting for a walk, and he’s giving me this face AGAIN:

…so I’ll keep this brief.

The sample is here– I’ve updated and posted Chapter One of Bound here on the blog. Some of you saw it in earlier stages, but things have changed a liiiiiitle bit. (Fun fact: this chapter used to be the prologue I was going to cut. I don’t think Aren would have been pleased!)

The news is that I’m done with edits. I’m going to leave it a few days, read through again to catch whatever remaining hiccups I can, and then a few brave volunteers will get their ARCs on Monday. Everyone else, I’ll be in touch.

WIPpet Wednesday: The Triumphant and Climactic Return

So, SOMEONE said I needed to get my ass back to WIPpet Wednesdays. And because this SOMEONE commands a fleet of flying monkeys, here I am.

But the thing is, edits are still going really well, so I don’t have time for anything complicated. I was having climax issues (heh), but I think I’ve got it sorted. Things have changed, melodrama has shifted to a lower-burning but still toasty conflict (I hope) that explodes into a lengthier scene than I’d had before.

I still don’t feel entirely comfortable adding words, but hey, I have permission. Yeah, the story’s long, but this is one advantage of independent publishing. I can give readers the whole story without worrying about being rejected because I went over 100,000 words to tell it properly, and I don’t have to charge $12.99 for an e-book to let people enjoy it. VALUE, PEOPLE!*

Oh, and if you offered to read an ARC and would like one a tiny bit early so you can notify me of typos/ minor flubs I may have added in the editing process , let me know. I have this idea where ARC readers who notice mistakes get entered for a chance to win a cameo appearance in the last book of the trilogy. 🙂

Sunday ROW80 Update– 3/4 Edition

I know. Late again. Absent again.

No, I didn’t exactly fall off the blogging wagon. I just don’t have time to write here right now, because EDITING. Yep, I’m actually doing it, getting through this thing one chapter at a time. One tiny change, one major scene overhaul, one “just go back and add this earlier and explain that other thing better” at a time.

Chapter 28 is up tonight, and it needs work.

It’s also kind of a big deal. Can’t screw it up.

What this means is that I’m 3/4 of the way through, and could very well be done these edits by the end of the week. The kids are both in school every morning this month, and I’m taking advantage of every hour they give me (and some they don’t, too).

Guys. I know this is only scary for me, and those of you who already have books out are laughing quietly to yourselves, but I’m really getting nervouscited.

Much as I’ve wanted to kick some chapters (and characters) right in the Timbits, I’m excited about this story. It’s so close to being ready.

Completed beta read of a FANTASTIC book that you’ll hear all about closer to release time. SO GOOD.

OTHER STUFF:

I didn’t really have many other goals for this round, but I’ve got a few other quick projects done. I don’t have time or space to break out the paints, but I gave two old My Little Pony girls new life with fresh hair in brand new colours. I think they look happy. 🙂

Pleases and Thank Yous and OMG A BOOK: ROW80 goals post, round 2

So this goals post is a week late. I said last Sunday that I was putting it off because of my surgical thinger on Monday (UPDATE: everything is fine, general anaesthesia is creepy, painkillers are kind of fun but I’m off of them now). That was true, but it wasn’t all of it. I was waiting to get stuff back from my editor, and I wanted to make sure his evaluation wasn’t going to be KILL IT NOW WITH FIRE AND EXTREME PREJUDICE before I made goals public.

Wouldn’t want to have to retract my goals now, would I?

Anyway…

This has the potential to be a huge round for me. I’m not going to lie, I might need you all to talk me down from an 8th-floor window ledge at least once, assuming I can find a building anywhere around here with eight floors.

Why? Because this round covers April 7 to June 26, and depending on how things go… no promises just yet… I might just have a book out by the end of this round.

LIKE A BOOK AN ACTUAL BOOK I MIGHT BE HOLDING MY WORDS IN MY HANDS IN LESS THAN THREE MONTHS HOLY CARP.*

I got the edits back, and they’re exactly what I had hoped for. My guy is a master of the “sh*t sandwich” technique. No punches pulled on things that need improvement, but some of what he said was so encouraging that I fell asleep smiling the night I got and read the (20 page) critique. When I read the line notes, I spent equal amounts of time slapping my forehead over silly little mistakes and grinning like an idiot because he totally got what I was going for so much of the time.

I’ll do a post on this experience later, because it was so interesting.

The important thing is that he had ideas on how to fix problems I already knew existed, and came up with suggestions that are really going to push this thing up to a whole ‘nother level.

I’m both excited and pants-crappingly terrified. It’s… different.

So what are we looking at over the next few months? A THRILLING roller-coaster of me working on that in a most professional manner and handling all of my other plans and responsibilities with the grace and aplomb of Martha Stewart organizing a dinner party, obviously.

*snerk*

But seriously. Professionalism is this round’s goal. Distance. This isn’t my baby anymore. It’s a product, and if I have anything to say about it, it’ll be a damned good one. I know I’m insecure about a lot of things, but I’m absolutely confident about that.

So, the goals. Please note that these could change and things could get pushed back. But:

APRIL:

Edit Bound (pray for me, send happy thoughts, whatever. Please. I’m new at this.)
Write back-cover copy (SOMEBODY SAVE ME)
set up Facebook author page, change personal account name for consistency
hire proof-reader (anyone know someone cheap? I’m pretty well out of cash)

This timeline terrifies me. I’ve been 100% sure I wanted to publish independently for almost a year, but the traditional-minded part of me is still screaming “YOU CAN’T DO IT THAT QUICKLY! SO WRONG!” I’m still amazed when I see authors post things like, “Well, finished a draft, guess I’ll release next month.”

Um… *hides under table*

Time to stop wussing out, though. This is my job now. As entrepreneurial ventures go, it’s a risky one. I just have to learn to be OK with that.

Now, before things get too crazy, I think I should take a minute to thank all of you. My WIPpeteers, my blog friends, my real-life friends who care and have encouraged me and put up with my “should-I-or-shouldn’t-I” crap, and especially those who have read my stuff… you’re all the reason I’m going ahead with this. Your love and encouragement have meant the world to me, and have given me the confidence to follow this dream. You’ve convinced me that this is a gamble that’s going to pay off (in satisfaction and experience, even if not in cash). Your advice and assistance have brought me this far. So thank you.

WIPpet Wednesday: The Not-So-Triumphant Return

So I’m working in Word now. Yaaay.

No, I don’t mind not being able to jump to whatever chapter and scene I want, like I can in Scrivener. Scrolling is fun. *eyelid twitch*

Many thanks to everyone who has helped me figure things out so far (like how to highlight the whole document so I could format– never picked that trick up on my own). I think I have it formatted correctly for editing. Now I just need to finish this read-through, and wait for my editor to say that it’s time.

For WIPpet Wedensday, here’s the last twelve lines (in my WordPress editor, anyway) that I read over. The math? 26th, minus 14 for the year. Because I’m reasonable like that.

Oh, context… mer man (hello!) was just visiting with Aren and Rowan, and he and Aren (POV character in this scene) are trying to figure out how to help Rowan. Kel (mer dude) is getting ready to change forms and go back to the water. Aren is refusing to acknowledge that he has feelings for Rowan, because… well, long story.

We reached the dock, and he stepped out of his clothes and handed them to me. I put everything in one of the wooden crates in case he needed it again.

Kel looked out over the dull gray water. “Try to be honest with yourself about what you’re feeling for her.”

“I don’t—”

He held up one hand to stop me. “I know, you don’t want to. It’s against your family’s religion or something.”

“No, I mean I can’t let anything like that happen. I told her I’d try to help her. You know as well as I do that she’s not safe as long as she’s with me.”

Kel looked back at me and raised an eyebrow. “You think safe is what she wants?” I didn’t answer. I had no idea what she wanted, and I doubted she knew, either. “I’ll see what I can do for her, if you’re sure that’s what’s best. It’ll be up to her, though.”

“Of course. Thank you.” I turned and walked back up the path, and heard Kel splash into the water behind me. I suddenly felt more alone than I had since I was a child, and hurried toward the light of the house.

Yes, there’s quite a bit of casual nudity in this book, what with people changing physical forms and all. I haven’t had any complaints so far. 😉

ROW80 UPDATE

Like I said, I’m just trying to be ready to send this thing off. After that, I’ll be reading, and going back to that plan of trying to finish Resurrection. I’m feeling a little better about things than I was a few days ago. I just wish I enjoyed challenges more, you know? I’m happiest when things are easy and I can be lazy.

There, I said it. I wish I were different, but that’s me. I haaate challenges. Does that mean I get bonus points for going ahead with one?

I think I need to get back to working in my office. I’ve been upstairs too much lately. Need my own space.

Much Wednesday. Very Edit. Wow.

So, um… I finished this round of edits on Bound. I got the book down under 108,000 words. Did I cut too much? Maybe. I guess I’ll find out next month, when someone new takes a crack at it.

I’m happy, really. I get giddy goosebumps over whole, huge chunks of this story, even after four years with it. I’m still in love after all this time. It’s just that I feel a little lost now. This was my focus all month. In November and December, it was re-drafting the sequel.

I don’t know what to do with myself right now.

Hang on.

There we go.

I know I’ll be back at this one in March, and there will be lots of work to do then. That leaves me with a month (give or take) to work on something else. And I want to work. I don’t want time off.

Re-write Resurrection? Maybe. It would be fun to try to get that out as a bonus around Halloween (though I hope to have Torn out in November, so maybe not). Outline book three? Perhaps. I know how it’s going to end (*sob*), and a few significant events (EPIC), but a lot of the middle is fuzzy. Start something completely different? I’m already taking Chuck Wendig up on this week’s flash fiction challenge. Fairy tales are kind of a thing around here, and I rolled a wicked combo (Cinderella + Urban Fantasy), so that’s been really fun. But that was only 1000 words, and only took a few hours. Once the editing’s done, that’s it.

WIPpet Wednesday

Per the revised rules, I can share the beginning of a new WIP. So let’s forget the math. Here are the first few lines of that flash fiction challenge project

“I never wanted this,” I whisper.

“I know.” He lifts my hair and unties the crimson ribbon he wrapped around my neck when he chose me. “That’s only going to make it sweeter.”

Yeah, that’s it. But never fear, I’ll have the rest posted tonight or tomorrow so I can get it entered. I don’t expect to win, but this has been a fun exercise. A thousand words is HARD, yo. There’s so much more story I could have put in there, but I think it works.

Writing: Goal of finishing edits COMPLETED. Need to set new goal for February.

Reading: Speaking of Chuck Wendig, he re-tweeted me yesterday, so he gets to be next on my TBR list. I just have to decide whether it’s going to be Under the Empyrean Sky or Blue Blazes, as I own both.

Life: Saw the chiropractor again yesterday. Was good again. House is a mess… might take care of that now. Need to walk the dog, but it’s farking cold. Might start pilates again, if my back holds up. Getting bad about using my phone when the kids are around, need to work on that goal again. Speaking in incomplete sentences. Need to fix that.

Note to self: get back to work, find happy.

Wednesday Stuff: Icy Cold Edition

It’s been a little chilly. Most of our snow melted last week, which was simply grand, but then everything kind of iced over.

Everything.

Pretty, but slippery. I nearly killed myself getting these pictures, so I figured I might as well share them with all of you.

Okay, on to WIPpet Wednesday. Edits on Bound are still progressing, if slowly at times. Not to jinx anything, but we’re on schedule as far as that goes.

*waits for roof to crash in and exploditate the computer*

Good. So here’s a snippet from Rowan’s POV in chapter 22, because I’m playing by the rules. But it’s a short one, because spoilers and good times abound, and I’d hate to ruin anything. We’re walking in on the middle of a fight, here.

–

I hesitated for a moment and felt some of my anger leave me, but my heart continued to pound. “You don’t think you can want something and still be afraid of it?”

His mouth twitched. “No, you can, and you should. What you’re saying no to is better than you can imagine. This decision should be so easy. You have until tomorrow to decide what you—”

I stepped closer again. “I don’t need until tomorrow. I know what I want.”

I know what she wants, too. Whether I let her have it is another question.

Editing: As I said, not too bad. I stalled over the weekend, but things are moving again.

Reading: Haven’t had time. I know that’s sad, but there you have it. Well, I read a good chunk of a romance novel, but I’m giving up on it. I don’t believe that this woman (or anyone) would fall for the guy. He’s an alpha male with no redeeming qualities except for what she’s projected onto him (and massive junk, because they always have that, don’t they?). I just KNOW her love will redeem him in the end, but I don’t think I’ll be sticking around to see it.

Life: I was supposed to see a chiropractor today, but he got the flu and had to reschedule for Thursday. I was disappointed, but what can you do? I went out and got groceries, anyway. And walked the dog. So that’s something.

Oh, and the snow came back.
