What Do You Look For In Entertainment?

Survey on gender and entertainment needs participants. Only takes a few minutes!

Kait Nolan's avatarKait Nolan

So last week I had a little bit of a ranty post about how so many male authors seem to be allergic to any kind of happy ending.  And a comment by one of my male pals got me to wondering…what exactly is it that MEN look for in entertainment that is actually being delivered by the books written by their half of the species.  Being a social scientist, OF COURSE that means I’m going to GIVE A SURVEY (I do love me some data).

So please, spread this far and wide.  I would really like a decent sample size.

Gender and entertainment survey.

ROW 80 Update: This does NOT happen edition

So my husband came home last night, long after I was in bed and asleep. He’d had a long, difficult weekend already (and it was barely even Sunday), but he managed to take a few minutes to stop by the goodbye party for the guy he works with. He told me, “there’s a surprise for you in the fridge.”

I LOVE fridge surprises! I did mumble something about how if it was roadkill I’d be very disappointed, but really there was only about a 14% chance of it being that.

And then, being mostly asleep, I forgot about it.

This morning, AJ said, “did you look in the fridge?”

“No!”

I ran to the fridge like a hyperactive little kid hunting for Easter eggs, expecting maybe a chocolate bar (because sometimes AJ’s cool like that) or a bit of dessert from the party.

I was not expecting… THIS:

20130616-084317.jpg

Pardon my language, but HOLY SHIT THAT’S A WHOLE LOT OF CRAB LEGS.

There was also deep-fried turkey, hashbrown casserole, and… I don’t know, ham or something. I kind of forgot about all of that when I saw the HOLY SHIT CRAB LEGS.

Do you guys have any idea? DO YOU?! The fact that I’m yelling might tell you that I like crab legs a lot. What you might not have guessed is that I haven’t had them in years. They’re expensive, and there aren’t many restaurants around here that serve them (at least, not at a price I can pay). I think the last time I had them was at Mandarin Buffet in Ontario, when my mom and I pretty much ate everything.

I’m not ashamed of that.

Not all of the surprises I wake up to are pleasant; cold cat barf squishing between my toes comes to mind when I consider the less-pleasant ones. But today… today shall live in my memory as a day of celebrating fathers (hi, dad!), unexpected blessings, and HOLY SHIT CRAB LEGS! God bless generous people with too much food at their parties.

Now, about that Round of Words update (now that I’ve frightened everyone away): through an intense regimen of BICFOC* and all but neglecting my children, I’ve passed the 20,000 word mark for JuNoWriMo. There’s still a long way to go, and I’m not quite on track, but I’m catching up. I’m reading a little when I can, but on rainy days when I’m stuck inside, it’s all about the writing right now. I’ve started looking for an editor for Bound, though I won’t need one until after this round of revisions and a blasting from beta readers… and then more revisions… but I’m putting feelers out there. That wasn’t a goal, but it’s related, so there you go. Also not an official goal, but I’ve been reading a bunch of ROW80 blog updates from people whose blogs I don’t normally follow, and commenting. I feel good about that, and it’s fun; you never know what you’re going to find out there in Blog Land.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have more running around in circles and screaming to do before I go warm the butter.

That’s not a euphemism.

An Open Letter To The New York Times Magazine

“It’s a cage that tells you that if your sexuality is too big, then you’re a slut. It’s a cage that tells you that if your sexuality is too small, then you’re a prude. It’s a cage that tells you that if you step inside or outside of that box, then your value as a human being has disappeared.”

Really interesting thoughts on this topic, and a beautifully expressed argument.

To the New York Times Magazine Editorial Staff –

Today you published an article with a deceptively casual title: “Unexcited? There May Be A Pill For That”. On its face, the article bears a simple enough premise: Studies have shown that levels of sexual arousal for women drop off after about one to four years of being in a committed relationship, whereas for men they tend to plateau but remain largely the same. This leads to all sorts of tension, anxiety, and lack of connection between partners. So a few researchers are doing clinical studies to find out whether there is a pharmaceutical compound that could boost these poor women’s libidos and make them desire their partners more, so that their marriages and relationships are happier and no longer in jeopardy.

At first, it seems innocuous enough: Women want better sex lives. What’s wrong with that? Why not, then, create…

Underwhelmed

I like to try to leave you guys with a little something positive to take into your weekend when I can, so here’s a song from WAY BACK in 1993 (holy crap!) that makes me happy. Something for all of the grammar and spelling geeks out there. Seriously, read the lyrics, the song is too funny. I’m partial to “I told her affection has to F’s, especially when you’re dealing with me.” 🙂

(there is an official music video for this, but it’s weird and has nothing to do with the song, so… yeah.)

Underwhelmed
(C. Murphy/Sloan, lyrics from sing365.com)

She was underwhelmed
If that’s a word
I know it’s not
‘Cause I looked it up
That’s one of those skills
That I learned in my school

I was overwhelmed
And I’m sure of that one
‘Cause I learned it
Back in grade school
When I was young

She said, “You is funny”
I said, “You are funny”
She said, “Thank you”
And I said, “Never mind”
She rolled her eyes
Her beautiful eyes

The point is not the grammar
It’s the feeling
That is certainly in my heart
But not in hers

But not in hers
But not in hers
But not in hers
But not in hers

We were talkin’ about people
That eat meat
I felt like an ass
‘Cause I was one
She said, “It’s okay,”
But I felt like
I just ate my young

She is obviously a person
With a cause
I told her that I don’t
Smoke or drink
She told me to loosen up
On the way to the L.C.

She skips her classes
And gets good grades
I go to my courses
Rain or shine
She’s passin’ her classes
While I attend mine

While I attend mine
While I attend mine
While I attend

She wrote out a story
About her life
I think it included
Something about me
I’m not sure of that
But I’m sure of one thing
Her spelling’s atrocious

She told me to read
Between the lines
And tell her exactly
What I got out of it
I told her affection
Had two F’s
Especially when you’re dealing with me

I usually notice
All the little things
One time I was proud of it
She says it’s annoying
She cursed me up and down
And rolled her R’s
Her beautiful R’s

She says I’m caught up
In triviality
All I really wanna know is
What she thinks of me
I think my love for her
Makes me miss the point

I miss the point
I miss the point
I miss the point
I miss the point
I miss the point
I miss the point
I miss the point

Hey mister…

(Note: For anyone not familiar with the term, the “LC” is the liquor commission. The booze store. It’s funnier if you know that.)

(Further note: I’ve seen people say that the girl in this song must be a non-native English speaker because of things like “you is funny.” Clearly they’ve never been here. Sloan is from Nova Scotia, but “you’s funny” is something a lot of people here in NL would say. A lot of Eastern Canada, definitely. Ever heard of “I’s the b’y?” Exactly. Not to perpetuate stereotypes, not everyone does it and even people with great educations do it in casual speech. Jut throwing my two cents into the “foreign girl” debate. I know plenty of people with horrible grammar/who can’t spell who grew up with English as their first and only language. NOT JUDGING.)

Fruit Kiss Kids: They will kill you in your sleep.

Today was AWESOME!

Wow, good day today! I had a little headache thanks to the nice, sunny weather, but I’ll let that go. Because…

-the kids slept until 8:00 this morning.

-it was sunny and 12 degrees (Celsius) outside today.

– AND… (redacted to preserve PG rating)

-I took Jack for a long and challenging (for me) walk. Got sweaty and a little sunburned BUT we had a good walk AND…

-a bald eagle flew right over us! So amazing.

-AND… I got to go to a Jamberry nails party on facebook. I realized that a party with no other actual people around is actually the perfect party for me. My mom also attended, so we kind of got to go shopping together from half a country away. Aww.

-AND I washed the car for the first time since the garden hose froze. I’d forgotten how very silver Tina Fe was under all of that dirt.

-AND I started editing another favourite part of Bound. OK, so I have too many favourites, but there’s feelings in this part, yo. Good feelings. Confusing feelings. Also children in ridiculous costumes punching each other, which can’t be a bad thing.

And with that, I go off to bed. The children are asleep, no one is coughing, this Tension Tamer tea is very delicious (and has a dragon the box, so hooray for that), the Advil will be working soon, the laundry is folded, and I’m going to go dream me some dreamy dreams.

Goodnight!

Meanwhile, in my brain…

Know What’s Been Giving Me a Happy?

Lots of stuff! So I want to share it with all of you, just in case it does the same for you.

XKCD comics.

Disney songs! I just got a bunch to listen to in the car with the kids. They generally prefer the Beatles, KISS, One Direction or Green Day, but they’ll let me have this sometimes.*

Here’s one of my personal favourites (sorry about the ad):

The view on my walk yesterday. Today it’s snowing like a Head & Shoulders commercial, but yesterday was lovely:

20130405-213919.jpg

…and look! I thought Zomie Woodchuck was lost, and that made me sad. Turns out the kids took him to Gigi and Poppy Cal’s house last month, so now he’s home safe. Yaaaay!

20130405-214823.jpg

One more thing: This is my 100th posy on Disregard the Prologue. I don’t know why that would give you a happy, but it’s kind of nifty for me. 😀

What made you happy this week?

*They have somewhat eclectic tastes. I don’t complain about most of it.

*In Case You Hadn’t Noticed…

Whoa…

No big post today- you’ll get something wonderful and awe-inspiring (or half-assed and kind of crumbly, depending on how this headache goes) for my birthday tomorrow.

But I was thinking: I do blog posts in advance and schedule them. It allows me to spread out the writing-related posts and move things around, and leaves time for editing while giving me a deadline. Yes, I usually edit. Who knew, right?

How weird would it be if I died, and just kept posting from beyond the grave? Not really, of course, but it would look like that, wouldn’t it? And it would be extra creepy if it happened today, and then tomorrow’s semi-edited post came up talking about all of the things I’m going to do this year, when I’m all alive and breathing and stuff.

I’ve done it now, haven’t I? I am so dead.

Goodbye, cruel world, I’m going to spend the rest of the day huddled in my bed, waiting for death by irony*.

In conclusion, I’m just going to leave you with a drawing of a toaster and tell you to pay no attention to anything I say when there’s an invisible grizzly gnawing on my skull.

20130222-111405.jpg

* I am fully aware that no matter how this word is used, someone will say that it’s wrong, but I think dying right before a blog post about the awesome aliveness of one’s future qualifies, even if dying AFTER a post about death does not. So there. I probably won’t be around to read those comments, anyway.
